AI humanizer tools ranked after testing 8 of them

102

I’m a grad student who’s been researching AI detection and humanization tools for the past six months. I tested eight popular AI humanizers head-to-head using the same set of AI-generated essays. Here’s my definitive ranking.

Testing Methodology

I generated five essays with ChatGPT-4o on different academic topics. Each humanizer processed the same five essays. I checked every output with Turnitin, GPTZero, and Copyleaks, then averaged the AI detection scores across all three detectors.

The Rankings

1. Walter Writes (Average AI score: 3.2%)
Consistently the best performer across all essay types. Output reads naturally and maintains the original meaning without adding fluff. The only downside is the word limit on the free tier.

2. Undetectable AI (Average AI score: 11.8%)
Solid second choice. Works well on most content types but occasionally produces slightly stilted phrasing in technical papers. Good value for the price.

3. Humbot (Average AI score: 18.4%)
Inconsistent. Sometimes nails it, sometimes barely changes the text. Results varied wildly between essay types which makes it unreliable.

4. HIX Bypass (Average AI score: 21.6%)
Decent for shorter content but struggles with longer essays. Tends to over-simplify complex arguments.

5. Grubby AI (Average AI score: 24.3%)
Middling results. Output quality is acceptable but detection scores are too high for comfort at strict schools.

6. WriteHuman (Average AI score: 28.7%)
Cheap but you get what you pay for. Better than nothing but I wouldn’t trust it for important papers.

7. StealthWriter (Average AI score: 33.1%)
Marketing doesn’t match reality. Failed to bring most essays below the typical 20% threshold.

8. Netus AI (Average AI score: 41.2%)
Barely better than submitting the raw AI text. Would not recommend.

Key Takeaway

There’s a massive quality gap between the top tools and the rest. If you’re going to use an AI humanizer, invest in one that actually works rather than gambling with a cheaper option that might get you flagged.

Important note: these tools should complement your own writing process, not replace it entirely. The best strategy is always to write your own first draft and use these tools to polish.

This ranking matches my experience almost exactly. Walter Writes and Undetectable are the only two Id actually trust with important papers.

Would love to see this test repeated with essays in different languages. I write in Spanish and wondering if the rankings would change.

The gap between #1 and #2 is massive. 3.2% vs 11.8% is the difference between zero worries and sweating over whether the prof will flag it.

Important point about using these to complement your writing not replace it. I use AI to help outline then write myself then humanize just the rough spots.
