AI detection tool pricing comparison for schools and districts
Putting together a budget proposal for AI detection tools for next year and figured I would share the pricing research I did. All prices verified as of May 2026.

For a school of 500 students with 25 teachers:
– Turnitin: ,500-2,500/year
– Copyleaks: ,995/year
– GPTZero Educator (all teachers): ,400/year
– Originality AI (3 accounts): 37/year
The budget answer is clear: Originality AI or GPTZero educator plans give you the most bang for buck. Turnitin is the most accurate but the cost is hard to justify unless your district really prioritizes this.

I've been using Copyleaks for about 3 months now and the results have definitely gotten worse recently. I think the detectors are catching up faster than the humanizers can adapt.
The biggest issue with these tools is that they all perform differently depending on the type of content. Academic papers with lots of citations seem to confuse them more than regular essays.
This is really helpful for teachers trying to figure this stuff out. We get zero training on how to interpret these scores and the admin just expects us to "know".
My professor uses Turnitin and I've been self-checking my work before submitting. The scores are pretty inconsistent though, sometimes it flags perfectly human text at 30%+ which is frustrating.
