Is Surfer SEO’s AI humanizer actually good for students?

So Surfer SEO recently added an AI humanizer feature and I’ve seen some people recommending it for academic work. As someone who uses Surfer for SEO content, I was curious how it performs for student essays.

What Surfer’s Humanizer Does

Surfer SEO is primarily a content optimization tool for bloggers and marketers. Their humanizer is designed to make AI-generated marketing content sound more natural. The key thing to understand is that it was NOT built for academic content specifically.

My Test

I ran two ChatGPT essays through it: one marketing blog post and one academic essay. The blog post came out great, naturally flowing and definitely sounded human. The academic essay though was a different story.

The humanizer made the essay sound too casual and conversational for academic standards. Phrases that should be formal got turned into something you’d read on a blog. My professor would definitely notice the tone shift.

AI Detection Results

Turnitin scored the humanized blog post at 8% and the academic essay at 19%. So it works okay for its intended purpose (marketing content) but falls short for academic writing.

The Pricing Problem

Here’s the thing, Surfer SEO starts at $89/month which is designed for professional content creators. If you’re a student who just needs an AI humanizer, paying $89/month when purpose-built academic humanizers cost a fraction of that makes zero sense.

Verdict

Surfer’s humanizer is good at what it’s designed for: making AI marketing content sound natural. But for academic papers? You’re better off with tools built specifically for student writing. The tone calibration just isn’t right for essays and research papers.
