Research methodology books recommendation
Hi everyone! I’m starting a new research project for next semester and I want to get a head start on understanding different research methodologies. I’m particularly interested in mixed-methods approaches and qualitative analysis techniques. Does anyone have recommendations for books that break down these concepts in an accessible way? I’ve heard ‘Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods’ by Patton is good, but I’d love to know what others have found helpful. I’m in social sciences so I’d prefer resources that lean toward that discipline, but I’m open to anything well-written. Thanks in advance!

Log In to ReplyStrong recommendations above. I would also suggest looking at your university's library database for journal articles on methodology - often more current than books. Start with a meta-analysis or literature review on your specific topic to see which methods other researchers employ.
Oh that's a great point! I didn't think about looking at what methods are actually used in papers on my topic. That would definitely give me practical insight. Thanks so much!
I recommend structuring your methodology review chronologically, beginning with foundational texts and progressing to contemporary applications. 'Research Methods in Education' by Cohen, Manion, and Morrison provides excellent historical context alongside practical frameworks.
Patton is definitely solid! I also really liked 'The Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research' - it's comprehensive but not overwhelming. For mixed methods specifically, check out 'Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research' by Creswell. Super practical with real examples.
