Winston AI: the enterprise AI detection tool nobody asked about

Winston AI markets itself as the most accurate AI detector available. At $18/month for the personal plan, it’s also one of the most expensive. Let’s see if it lives up to the claims.

I tested Winston AI with my standard set of 20 essays and it performed well. 17 out of 20 correct classifications, with 2 false positives on human text and 1 missed AI essay. That puts it in the same tier as Turnitin and slightly above GPTZero and Copyleaks.

The Confidence Score

What sets Winston apart is its confidence scoring. Instead of just saying “AI detected” or “human,” it gives detailed sentence-level breakdowns with confidence levels. You can see exactly which sentences triggered the detection and how confident the model is about each one.

Readability Analysis

For Students?

Unless you’re a student who also runs a content business, Winston AI is overkill. The accuracy is good but comparable to what you get from Turnitin (which your school likely provides free) or Scribbr (which has a free tier). Paying $18/month for marginal accuracy improvement over free tools doesn’t make sense for most students.

Verdict

Solid tool for its intended market (publishers and content businesses). Not necessary for students who have access to institutional or free alternatives. The accuracy is competitive but not enough better than free options to justify the cost for academic use.
