ZeroGPT review: why most students should avoid it

ZeroGPT shows up as one of the first results when you Google “AI detector” and a lot of students use it for self-checking. Here’s why I think that’s a mistake.

The Accuracy Problem

I ran 20 essays through ZeroGPT (10 human, 10 AI) and the results were concerning. It correctly identified only 6 of the 10 AI essays and falsely flagged 4 of the 10 human essays. That’s essentially a coin flip with extra steps.

The Consistency Problem

Even worse than the accuracy is the inconsistency. I ran the same human-written essay through ZeroGPT five times and got scores of: 11.2%, 34.8%, 22.1%, 0%, and 45.6%. Same exact text. Five completely different results. How can anyone make decisions based on this?

Why It Ranks High on Google

ZeroGPT has good SEO and a clean interface, which is why it shows up first in search results. But search ranking doesn’t equal quality. They also have an aggressive free tier that attracts users who then cite it to their teachers.

The Danger for Students

If your teacher uses ZeroGPT to check your paper and it falsely flags you at 45%, you could face serious consequences based on a deeply unreliable tool. And if you self-check with ZeroGPT and it says 0%, you might think you’re safe when another detector would flag issues.

What to Use Instead

For self-checking, use Scribbr’s detector (powered by Turnitin’s engine) or GPTZero. Neither is perfect but both are significantly more reliable and consistent than ZeroGPT. Best of all, use whatever tool your school officially uses.

If Your Teacher Uses ZeroGPT

Politely point them to the accuracy studies showing ZeroGPT’s limitations. Organizations like the Digital Education Council have published comparisons showing ZeroGPT’s poor performance relative to Turnitin and Copyleaks. Any fair-minded professor would want to use a reliable tool.
