Does Turnitin detect paraphrasing tools like QuillBot?
This is one of the most asked questions in student forums. The short answer is: it depends on what you’re paraphrasing and which tool you use.
Turnitin’s Two Detection Systems
Turnitin actually runs two separate checks. The plagiarism check compares your text against its database of sources and other submissions. The AI detection check analyzes writing patterns to determine if text was generated by AI. These are independent systems.
Paraphrasing Human Sources
If you take a paragraph from a research paper and run it through QuillBot, Turnitin’s plagiarism checker might still recognize the underlying source if the paraphrase is too close. However, the AI detection system will NOT flag it as AI-generated because the underlying text is from a human source.
Paraphrasing AI-Generated Text
If you paraphrase ChatGPT output through QuillBot, the AI detection system may still flag it. QuillBot doesn’t specifically target AI detection patterns, it just rephrases text. The statistical fingerprints of AI writing can survive basic paraphrasing.
My Test Results
I ran several scenarios through Turnitin:
Human text through QuillBot: 3% AI score (safe)
AI text through QuillBot once: 42% AI score (flagged)
AI text through QuillBot twice: 28% AI score (borderline)
AI text through QuillBot three times: 19% AI score (risky)
The Practical Answer
Using paraphrasing tools on your own writing or on properly cited sources is fine. Turnitin handles this the same way it handles naturally paraphrased text. Using paraphrasing tools to disguise AI-generated text is unreliable, the AI signal persists through basic paraphrasing at detectable levels.
If you need to genuinely rephrase source material, QuillBot is a fine tool. Just make sure to cite your sources regardless of how much you paraphrase. And never use it as a laundering tool for AI text.

Log In to ReplyUsing paraphrasing tools on properly cited sources is fine and always has been. The problem is people trying to use them as detection bypass which they were never designed for.
42% for AI text paraphrased once through QuillBot shows that paraphrasing is NOT the same as humanizing. Different tools for different problems.
