Ethical ways students can use AI writing tools right now

There’s a huge middle ground between “never touch AI” and “submit ChatGPT output as your own work.” Here are ways I use AI tools ethically that have actually improved my writing and grades.

1. Brainstorming and outlining

I’ll ask ChatGPT to help me generate potential angles for an essay topic. I might use 1 of the 5 suggestions it gives me and develop it in my own direction. The AI helps me get past the blank page, but the thinking is mine.

2. Understanding difficult concepts

Before writing about something complex, I’ll ask Claude to explain the concept in simple terms. This helps me understand it well enough to write about it in my own words.

3. Getting feedback on drafts

After I write a draft myself, I’ll paste it into an AI tool and ask “What are the weaknesses in this argument?” or “What am I missing?” Then I revise based on the feedback. The AI is a peer reviewer, not a ghostwriter.

4. Grammar and style checking

Tools like Grammarly (which uses AI) are universally accepted. Using AI for proofreading is generally fine at most schools.

5. Learning from rewrites

Sometimes I’ll ask an AI to rewrite a paragraph I’ve written, then compare the two versions to see what it changed. This teaches me about sentence structure and word choice. I keep my version but learn from the comparison.

What’s NOT ethical:

  • Submitting AI-generated text as your own
  • Using AI to write significant portions of your paper
  • Not disclosing AI use when your school’s policy requires it

Check your school’s policy:

Every school is different. Some ban all AI use, some allow it with disclosure, some encourage it. Know your institution’s rules before using any AI tools. When in doubt, ask your professor.

How does your school handle AI tools? Strict ban or more flexible?

This is the most balanced take on AI tools I've seen. Not 'AI bad' or 'use AI for everything' but actually practical middle ground advice.

My professor actually encourages us to use AI for brainstorming but requires us to note it in a footnote. I think this is the way forward for most schools.
