Which Free AI Detector Is Most Accurate? I Tested 6 Tools on 10 Essays
I got tired of not knowing which AI detector to trust so I ran the same 10 essays through 6 different free detectors. Five of the essays were 100% human written by me. Five were generated by ChatGPT-4o.
Results were honestly surprising. GPTZero correctly identified 8 out of 10 but flagged one of my human essays as AI. ZeroGPT was terrible and only got 5 right. Copyleaks free version got 7 right. Originality dot ai free scan got 9 right but the free tier is super limited. Sapling got 6 right. Writer AI detector got 7 right.
The biggest takeaway is that NO free tool is reliable enough to use as your only check. If you want confidence run your text through at least 2 or 3 different detectors and look for consensus.
Also worth noting that all of them struggled more with shorter text under 300 words. Accuracy went up significantly on the longer essays.
What detectors are you all using? Anyone have experience with the paid tiers being more accurate?

Did you test with any essays that used AI for brainstorming but were written by hand? Thats the gray area most students are in.
This is exactly the kind of testing we need more of. The fact that ZeroGPT only got 50% right means its basically a coin flip.
