How I set up AI detection in my classroom without becoming the AI police

After a semester of stressing about AI in student work, I finally found a workflow that works. Sharing for other teachers who feel overwhelmed.

My 3-step system:

Step 1 – Prevention over detection. I redesigned half my assignments to require personal voice. Stuff like “describe how this theme connects to YOUR life” or “analyze this text using an example from class discussion.” AI cannot fake specificity about things that happened in your classroom.

Step 2 – Spot check, do not bulk scan. I only run detection on essays that feel off to me as a reader. If a C student suddenly writes like a grad student, that is worth checking. I use GPTZero for quick checks since it is free and fast.

Step 3 – Conversation not accusation. If detection flags something, I ask the student to explain their writing process. Real writers can walk you through their thinking. AI users usually cannot explain why they made specific choices.

This approach catches the egregious cases without turning my classroom into a surveillance state. My students actually write better now because the assignments require genuine personal engagement.

The detectors are a tool not a verdict. Use them to start conversations not end them.
