how our school district rolled out AI detection (admin perspective)
I am a curriculum coordinator for a K-12 district (about 4,500 students) and wanted to share our experience implementing AI detection tools district-wide since I see a lot of teachers asking about this.
What we considered:
– Turnitin Originality: Best accuracy but /student/year was too expensive for our budget
– GPTZero for Education: /month per teacher, decent accuracy, good batch checking
– Copyleaks Education: .99/student/year, good integration with Google Classroom
– Originality AI: 4.95/month flat rate, unlimited checks, no per-student pricing
What we chose: We went with a combination. Copyleaks for the Google Classroom integration (most teachers use Google Docs) and GPTZero as a backup for manual spot-checks.
Biggest lessons:
1. Train teachers BEFORE rolling out tools. Half of our initial problems were from teachers not understanding what AI scores actually mean.
2. Create a clear policy. We wrote a 2-page document explaining when detection should be used, what scores mean, and the required process before any academic integrity conversation.
3. Do not make it punitive immediately. First semester was educational – students caught using AI got a redo, not a zero.

Log In to ReplyI switched from Turnitin to GPTZero last month and the difference is significant. GPTZero handles longer texts much better and the output reads more naturally imo.
My professor uses GPTZero and I've been self-checking my work before submitting. The scores are pretty inconsistent though, sometimes it flags perfectly human text at 30%+ which is frustrating.
As someone who writes in English as a second language, these detectors flag my writing way more often than native speakers. It's really unfair and my university doesn't seem to care.
