My University Just Changed Its AI Policy Mid-Semester and Now Teachers Are Confused Too

44

So my university sent out a new AI policy in March that basically says professors have discretion on whether to allow AI tools in their classes. Before that there was a blanket ban.

Problem is half my professors havent updated their syllabi and the other half are confused about what counts as an AI tool. One professor said Grammarly is fine but QuillBot isnt. Another said no AI at all which would technically include spell check if you think about it.

I talked to a TA who said the professors were told to start using Turnitin AI detection but never got training on how to interpret the results. Shes seen professors flag papers at 15% AI score when the tool itself says anything under 20% is inconclusive.

The whole thing feels like it was rolled out without thinking about how it would actually work in practice. Teachers need better training and clearer guidelines. Students need to know what is actually expected before we get penalized.

Anyone else dealing with messy AI policy rollouts at their school?

THIS. My school did the exact same thing. Zero training for professors, totally inconsistent enforcement across departments.

Professor here. Trust me we are just as frustrated. We got an email saying use your judgment with no framework for what that means.
