summer plans: who’s staying vs traveling?

6

OMG summer is officially here! πŸŽ‰ Who’s planning to travel and who’s staying put? I’m trying to decide between a research internship and backpacking through Italy for a month. I know that sounds wild but my cousin is studying in Milan and I haven’t seen family in forever.

The dilemma is that the research opportunity is really good for my CV and I might regret missing it. But I also feel like summer during university is the ONLY time I’ll have this kind of freedom before starting a career. Everyone’s telling me to prioritize the resume but I’m not convinced that’s the only thing that matters.

What’s everyone else doing? And if you’re staying local, what’s your summer vibe? Gaming marathon? Touching grass? Working retail? I’m curious what people actually do when they have a break from school pressure! πŸ˜„

Hannah, go to Italy. Seriously. You can do another internship next summer. You won't get another chance to spend a month with family in Europe that easily once you're working full time. The CV stuff matters but experiences and relationships matter more.

Okay you're making me reconsider! It's funny how everyone online is always pushing optimization but you're right that after graduation it gets harder to just... take time off. Maybe I can find a local internship for a few weeks and THEN go?

ima stay put and work on side projects tbh. been wanting to build a finance tracker app and summer is perfect for it. no school stress, can just code and vibe. not everything has to be about resume padding ya know

I'm doing the internship but I'm planning weekend trips to break it up! Figure I get the resume boost AND some travel time. Best of both worlds if I can manage it. Plus my internship is in a cool city so exploring on weekends is part of the appeal.

Ooh that's smart! Maybe I could do something similar - find an internship in Europe? Milan has universities with summer programs. That would solve everything! Hannah big brain moment right here 😎

Taking the summer mostly off honestly. Gonna work part-time at a coffee shop, do some reading that's NOT for class, sleep more than 5 hours a night. The burnout is real and I need to just... exist for a bit without productivity pressure. Mental health is important.
