The Ultimate Calculus Survival Guide

0

ok so i know calculus destroys people so heres my attempt at a survival guide. ive been tutoring calc 1 and 2 for two years now and these are the patterns i see with students who struggle vs ones who get it.

LIMITS – most people overthink these. if you can plug in the number and get an answer, thats your limit. its only when you get 0/0 or infinity/infinity that you need tricks. L’hopital’s rule is your best friend but ONLY for those indeterminate forms, dont just use it on everything.

DERIVATIVES – the power rule is like 60% of what you need. bring down the exponent, subtract one. chain rule is just working from outside in. product rule and quotient rule have formulas but honestly quotient rule is just product rule with the bottom squared, learn one and you basically know the other.

INTEGRALS – this is where people panic but its literally just derivatives backwards. if derivative of x^3 is 3x^2, then integral of 3x^2 is x^3 + C. u-substitution is the most important technique, practice it until its automatic.

BIGGEST MISTAKES I SEE:
1. not practicing enough problems. reading the textbook isnt studying calc, doing problems is
2. skipping algebra review. most calc errors are actually algebra errors
3. trying to memorize instead of understand. if you understand WHY the chain rule works you dont need to memorize the formula
4. not going to office hours. professors WANT to help you

free resources that saved my life: professor leonard on youtube (seriously this man is a saint), paul’s online math notes, 3blue1brown essence of calculus series for the intuition

drop your calc questions below and ill try to help 🧮

oh my god THANK YOU for this. im literally in calc 2 rn and integration by parts is killing me. like i understand the formula but i never know what to pick for u and dv?? any tips for that specifically?

yess ok so theres actually an acronym for picking u - LIATE. logarithmic, inverse trig, algebraic, trig, exponential. whatever comes first in that list should be your u. works like 90% of the time. try it on your next problem set and lmk if it helps

This is a well-structured guide, Sam. I would add that for students who prefer a more theoretical foundation, understanding the epsilon-delta definition of limits—while initially challenging—provides invaluable intuition for subsequent concepts. Additionally, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus deserves its own section, as it elegantly connects differentiation and integration in a way that many students fail to appreciate fully.

bro professor leonard literally saved my life in calc 1. i went from almost failing to getting a B+ just from watching his videos. the 3blue1brown stuff is fire too but its more for understanding not really for exam prep imo. also hot take but symbolab is better than wolfram alpha for showing steps, fight me

symbolab gang rise up honestly. wolfram is good but you need premium to see steps and symbolab just shows them for free. also the practice problems on there are solid

Bellissima guida Sam! Cmq per chi studia in Italia, consiglio anche i video di Elia Bombardelli su YouTube. Spiega analisi 1 in modo chiarissimo, in italiano ovviamente. I limiti e le derivate li ho capiti solo grazie a lui sinceramente

just wanted to say thanks for sharing, this really helped me out

has anyone tried this recently? wondering if it still works

lol same, thought I was the only one

qualcuno ha provato a parlarne col professore? come ha reagito?
