Turnitin vs GPTZero vs Originality AI – Which Detector Should Students Use to Self-Check?
Before I submit anything now I run it through an AI detector first. Call it paranoia but after my roommate got called in for an academic integrity meeting over a paper she wrote entirely herself I am not taking chances.
The question is which detector should I actually trust? My school uses Turnitin so ideally I want something that gives similar results. But the Turnitin AI detection tool isnt available to students directly.
I have been using GPTZero and Originality AI. GPTZero is free and decent but I have noticed it gives different scores if you check the same text twice. Originality AI costs money per scan but seems more consistent.
Has anyone found a detector that closely matches what Turnitin flags? That would be the most useful since thats what actually matters for grades.
Also curious if running your text through a detector and then editing the flagged parts is a legitimate strategy or if that crosses some ethical line.

Log In to ReplyThis is really helpful for teachers trying to figure this stuff out. We get zero training on how to interpret these scores and the admin just expects us to "know".

Honestly the paid tools aren't worth it unless you're using them regularly. I paid for a month, used it twice, and cancelled. If you only need it occasionally just stick with the free tier.
