ESL students are getting destroyed by AI detection false positives

0

I cannot believe this is still happening in 2026. You would think the technology would be better by now but here we are.\n\nWhat really bothers me is that these tools are being treated as infallible when the research clearly shows they are not. A 3% false positive rate sounds low until you realize that means dozens of innocent students at every large university are getting wrongly accused every semester.\n\nCurious to hear from both students and teachers on this one.

Great post. One thing I would add is that results can vary a lot depending on the length of the text you are testing. Shorter pieces tend to be less reliable.

I had the opposite experience actually but I think context matters a lot.

My professor actually showed us the Turnitin AI report in class and explained how it works. Made me realize how many limitations these tools have.

Has anyone tried using multiple detectors and comparing results? I found that when two or more agree the accuracy goes way up.

100% this. Could not have said it better.

Can confirm this matches my experience. I tested a few of these myself and got similar results.

This needs to be higher up. More people need to see this.

I had a completely different experience with this. For me the results were actually pretty good but I think it depends on what kind of content you are testing.

Interesting take. I wonder if this varies by institution.

As someone who has taught for 15 years I can tell you that good teachers can tell the difference between AI and student writing without any tools. The tools just create a false sense of certainty.

I showed this to my study group and we had a great discussion about it. Thanks for sparking the conversation.
