I got accused of using AI on a paper I wrote entirely by hand
Sharing my experience because I know I am not the only one dealing with this. If this happened to you please share your story too.\n\nI spent 8 hours writing my paper. Went through three drafts. Had my roommate read it. Submitted it feeling really good about it. Then I get an email saying Turnitin flagged 43% of my paper as AI generated.\n\nI have never used AI to write any of my papers. English is my second language and I think that might be part of the problem. My writing style tends to be very structured because that is how I was taught.\n\nThoughts? I know this is a controversial topic but I think we can have a productive discussion about it.

Log In to ReplyHonestly this whole situation makes me angry. Students should not have to worry about being falsely accused when they write their own work.
The fact that universities are spending thousands on these tools when the accuracy is this questionable is wild to me.
The technology is changing so fast that any review is basically outdated within a few months. That said this is the most current comparison I have seen.
Good point I had not thought about it that way.
Thanks for sharing this. I have been looking for exactly this kind of breakdown. Do you have any recommendations for specific use cases?
That is a great tip. Going to try this on my next paper.
Great post. One thing I would add is that results can vary a lot depending on the length of the text you are testing. Shorter pieces tend to be less reliable.
The false positive issue is real. I write very formally because English is my third language and I get flagged constantly.
Yeah I ran into the same thing. It is frustrating.
Can confirm this matches my experience. I tested a few of these myself and got similar results.
Totally agree with this. Same experience here.
Really interesting data. Would be curious to see how these results hold up with different types of writing like lab reports or case studies.
Totally agree with this. Same experience here.
