transfer student tips and everything you need to know
I’m a transfer student who just finished my first year at my new university and I want to share what I wish I’d known before transferring. A lot of people are nervous about transferring and I get it, but it’s completely doable.
THE LOGISTICS:
– Application deadlines for transfers are usually LATER than freshman deadlines (March-June)
– You need both high school AND college transcripts
– Your GPA from college matters more than high school at this point
– Some schools are transfer-friendly, some aren’t. Research this before you apply
– You might lose credits. This is annoying but happens. Check transfer equivalency guides
CREDIT TRANSFER REALITY:
– Not all credits will transfer. Sometimes you lose 5-10 credits
– This might delay your graduation. Budget for it mentally
– Some schools cap how many credits transfer (usually max 60 credits)
– Fight for your credits if you think they should count. Meet with advisor and make a case
SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SIDE:
– This is the HARD part nobody talks about
– Everyone has already formed friend groups. You’re joining mid-game
– Join clubs immediately. Like week 1. This is your community building
– Dorm life might be harder if you’re in upper-class housing without built-in community
– You might feel behind academically even if you’re not
– Homesickness hits different when you’re already ‘home’ at college
WHAT HELPED ME:
– Finding even ONE good friend in my first week
– Attending transfer-specific events if your school offers them
– Being proactive about meeting people (they won’t come to you)
– Joining a club I was actually interested in, not just for socializing
– Going to office hours to build relationships with professors
– Being patient with myself – it took 2-3 months to feel settled
ACADEMIC CONSIDERATIONS:
– You might be taking harder classes while adjusting to a new school. That’s a lot
– Ask your professors if they know you’re a transfer. Some give grace
– Build relationships with your new professors early
– The academic rigor might be different. Adjust your study habits accordingly
THE HONEST TRUTH:
Transferring was one of the best decisions I made AND one of the hardest transitions I’ve been through. Both can be true. If you’re thinking about it, do it, but go in with eyes open about the social/emotional piece. That matters as much as the academic fit.

Log In to Replythe credit transfer part hits hard. i watched my friend transfer and lose a whole semester worth of credits. he had to take 5 more classes than he planned. make sure you talk to the registrar BEFORE you commit to transferring
YES this is so important. ask for the transfer equivalency guide BEFORE you apply. like specifically which of your classes will count toward which requirements
the advice about joining clubs week 1 is crucial. i know you're overwhelmed but pushing yourself to do this one thing makes SUCH a difference. you need your people immediately
honestly transfer students often do better academically because you CHOSE to be there vs just going to your state school. you have a reason. you made a decision. that motivation shows
this is reassuring because i'm considering transferring next year and i was mainly scared about the social stuff. hearing that it's hard but doable and that other people have felt the same way helps a lot
olivia thank you for this. my friend is transferring and i was worried about how they'd adjust. this post made me realize i should be checking in more often and inviting them to stuff. transfers need intentional friendship building from both sides
thank you for being real about the social part. everyone talks about credits and academics but like the loneliness part is REAL. you're going to a place where everyone already has their thing and you're the new person. preparing mentally for that matters
