Summer Research Internship Programs – Last Minute Opportunities
Hi everyone! I know we’re getting late into the season, but I wanted to share some research internship programs that are still accepting applications for summer 2026. I’ve been doing some digging and found several universities and research institutes with rolling admissions.
First, there’s the National Science Foundation’s REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program – some sites are still open. These are fantastic because they’re funded, so you get a stipend plus housing. The work is rigorous but incredibly valuable for building your CV.
Second, many companies like Bosch, Siemens, and smaller biotech firms have summer research positions. They often hire right up until June because people drop out or change plans. Don’t hesitate to reach out directly to department heads if positions aren’t listed.
Third, your university’s research office usually has emergency funding for last-minute placements. Ask your advisor if there are any local projects needing summer help.
I’m currently deciding between two REU programs myself – one in computational chemistry and one in materials science. The competition is intense but absolutely worth applying. What experiences are you all pursuing this summer?

Log In to ReplyDoes anyone have recommendations for programs outside the US? I'm an international student and many REU programs require US citizenship or permanent residency. I've been looking at research opportunities in Europe but the funding is less clear.
Lily, I can connect you with colleagues at several European institutions. Feel free to message me privately. We often have last-minute openings because some students defer or graduate early.
Lily!! I looked into this too! Check out the IAESTE program - it's huge for international student placements. Also look at individual country research councils. Germany's DAAD has excellent programs, and Switzerland's ETH has some funded positions for international students. A bit of digging but totally worth it! ๐ช
Is anyone else doing something completely different for the summer? I'm thinking of just working retail and saving money. The pressure to always have a 'meaningful' experience is real but sometimes rest and financial stability matter too.
Alex, that's totally valid! Not everyone needs to be in research or prestigious internships every summer. Financial stability is important and honestly, having a lower-stress summer can help you recharge. Do what works best for you and your goals.
Great post! I'd add that some tech companies still have openings too. I know Google, Meta, and Microsoft have rolling internship applications. The REU programs are amazing if you're into pure research, but if you want industry experience, tech companies offer better compensation and networking.
Absolutely, Dev! I should have mentioned tech opportunities - you're right that they're still hiring. The advantage of tech internships is the resume factor and the pay is usually better than REU. Though I find the research focus appeals more to me personally. Either way, everyone should explore both tracks.
